I often find a few of you, take buff to have a lot more power then it actually has. I took this from the d20 modern SRD which I think more clearly defines bluff then the regular D&D SRD.
A bluff is not the same thing as a lie. A bluff is a quick prevarication intended to distract, confuse, or mislead, generally only for the short term. A bluff is not intended to withstand long-term or careful scrutiny, but rather to momentarily deter an action or decision. Bluffs involve attitude and body language. Bluffs often include lies, but they usually aren’t very sophisticated and aren’t intended to deceive the target for more than a few moments.
A lie, on the other hand, is a simple misrepresentation of the facts. Body language and attitude aren’t a big part of communication. The lie may be very sophisticated and well thought-out, and is intended to deceive a character at least until he or she discovers evidence to the contrary. A character should not make a Bluff check every time he or she utters a lie.
Bluff can't make people stupid, its meant to a momentary distraction a few rounds. You bluff your way past the guards or to sell stolen goods to a merchant. (the old PHB example). But bluffing someone into 2+2=8(which is how some of you treat it) doesn't work for very long unless they happen to be really stupid.

To true Lord Kain.
But Bluff is still a useful skill to have ranks in. It has quite a few other uses. Combat, not just for sneak attack, makes the high DEX AC enemy a little easier to hit. Diversion, the classic "OMG what's that over there?" and now I'm hiding, is greatly useful in running away (though why we haven't seen a certain DM using it is beyond me). Finally Coded messages to fellow PCs while trying diplomacy before (or during) a major fight.
Now I understand that all of these are easily over come with Sense Motive or magic, but not all enemies will have the abilities specifically needed to over come all the non battle tricks of the party. And if they do the DM is building that adventure specifically to give the PCs a hard time.
Feh, I rolled a 34, now you believe that 2+2=Fish.
