i know many people are partial to a reincarnation that will make sure you are a playable race, but i think its important to look closer at being a badger.
here are some of the intresting things you can be with the new reincarnation.
bugbear, gnoll, kobold, orc, troglodyte. everthing else is playable, like elve, dwarf, goblin, gnome and so forth.
here are some of the intresting thing you can become with the old reincarnation. black bear, brown bear, boar, eagle, hawk, leopard, wolverine, wolf, owl, pixie, badger.
now consider this point in an argument for the old reincarnation, would'nt haveing various high level wizards being eagles be much more amuseing then a high level wizard comeing back as a koblad?
i think it would, its not like people dont know what reincarnation can do. i think even in 3.5E reincarnation isnt a good way to come back to life beacuse you cant guarentee your race.
i think that the true way for reincarnation to be a valid way to come back to life would be for it to guarentee your race. but then we would not be dealing with the reincarantion spell at all.!
but my number one reason for the old reincarnatino spell is that its just makes me laugh to think of a 17th level dwarven barbarian comeing back to life as a badger.

Perhaps but a high level wizard reincarnated as an eagle couldn't cast most of his spells being unable to produce symbolical components or as hold focus and material components. The old version was really worse death to most characters.
Resurrection requires a 10,000gp worth of diamonds. So if the body is damaged beyond the ability of raise dead, Resurrection may still be beyond the ability of many to afford.
Leaving your only option to bring back your fallen foe through reincarnate.
