The idea here is that the captian of a guard unit may not be really any more experienced than his comrades.... In other words he may not be a better figher he may simply be a better leader. I feel a template is the best way of applying this. This will do nothing to change the level, race, class, hp or bab of the guard captain but will give him bonuses to skills...
The idea is to give them the ability to inspire the guard to be more vigilant by their presence.
Think of it as an Aura that gives the guards: +2 save vs fear and sleep +4 sense motive +2 spot and search WHile they know they are being observed by the captain.

Templates are used for transformations, (into undead) Supernatural parentage. (dragons, outsiders etc) Mutations (multi-headed, pusdo-natural) A templated added simply because someone is the captain of the guards doesn't make sense. The captain would always be chosen based on more experince.
The idea you have is better as a 3 level PrC then has a template

i said originally prestige class, would do the trick more.
maybe in a powerful military, there could be a template that could be added to the best soulders.
like the tefleam shadow masters template, you know.
if they do good enough they could be giveing this template as a reward, and then put in charge of the gaurd. beacuse as it is, jsut slapping a tempalte on things might not work well with game mechanics. like lord kain said. tempaltes are for transformations.
and any template that the best soulders would get you have to transform them a little, maybe make them more powerful looking.
i think its an intresteing idea, but there wasnt quite enough posted on it for me to judge really good. maybe magnus was thinking about it in the same way i would think about it, in which case im fine with it.
but i dont know.

Okie I can see the prestiege class being definitely the way too go. Just I think Captains should have some kind of posetive effect on the troop morale in small scale combat. I do like the idea of template being applied for elite soldiers like the shadow lords though I will have to think about this.

How about you just give the guard captain more levels then the rest of the guard. Ya know, like it says in the DMG?

Actually, the template seems preety good, it increases the challeng rating with out incraesing the loot you should expect from a mor power full NPC.
Feh, we'd still expect it.
